I found this not to be the case: I was able to run the command from ninjaphysics' answer on Linux and it completed with no problems. Maybe it depends on the pip version? (Also, I don't think the general griping about pip is useful here. I understand that you may have had dependency problems with Python packages, but millions of people do not - it's demonstrably not true in general that "installing anything on pip seems to turn into a dependency nightmare".)
